TÜV Rheinland Academy – Our Heritage, Our Mission.

There was a time when the lack of professional qualification could cost you your life – at least if you earned a living as a steam boiler attendant at the end of the 19th century. Steam boiler technology was an engine of economic advancement in its time, but also represented a considerable risk to life and limb. Severe steam boiler explosions were the order of the day at the beginning of the First Industrial Revolution.

Only with the founding of the steam boiler inspection association, called the Dampfkesselüberwachungsverein (DÜV) and later TÜV Rheinland – these accidents became much less frequent – because experts regularly inspected the technical condition of steam boilers and in turn trained others in the proper maintenance and operation of steam boilers.

What makes us different.

Providing up-to-date competencies was not only the key to safer work 140 years ago, but also to prosperity and personal outlooks. We were already pioneers in the area of training professional expertise at the end of the 19th century.

Today, it’s no longer the steam boiler that defines our skills. Instead, IT and digitalization are applying a lot of pressure for change in business, society and in every individual.

The number of Internet-connected devices is multiplying faster than the world’s population, even today more things than people are networked to one another. The Internet of Things, networked driving or Industry 4.0 are the ways of expressing this dynamic shift.

It is already clear that many of today’s students will later take jobs that don’t even exist yet. From the Internet of things, automation and AI systems, roles will arise that demand completely different skills and competencies than we can imagine today.

Who will handle this technological development? Technical professionals who are able to actively shape our future, to competently control and safeguard it, are sought after today like never before.
